Dontay Savoy, born Matthew Doby III in Compton, California, discovered his appreciation for beauty and artistry in women at a young age. Unsure of where life would lead but driven by natural talent, he took a leap of faith—leaving his position as a Finance Service Representative at Bally Total Fitness to pursue a career in cosmetology.

He enrolled at Universal College of Beauty in Leimert Park, a historic Black neighborhood in Los Angeles, where he refined his craft and trained alongside women from all walks of life. It was there that Dontay truly found his creative home.

After graduating and earning his California Cosmetology License, Dontay began his professional journey as an assistant at Epiphany Hair Studio, owned by the now-legendary hairstylist Kimberly Kimble. Immersed in Hollywood’s fast-paced entertainment scene, he quickly learned the inner workings of the industry—styling hair for music videos, award shows, and red-carpet events.

Determined to carve out his own lane, Dontay became a recognizable name through his featured role on the reality television series “LA Hair.” His infectious laugh, quick wit, and innovative hairstyling made him a standout on-screen personality.

Soon after, his career expanded behind the camera as well. Dontay served as Department Head for the hair teams of various sitcoms and television productions across Los Angeles, all while maintaining a thriving private salon clientele.

On March 13, 2020, while working on set, a production meeting signaled an industry-wide shutdown as COVID-19 reshaped the world. The abrupt halt pushed Dontay to rethink the direction of his career and explore the broader landscape of beauty within entertainment.

A year later, he was recruited to bring his expertise to a new Black-owned multimedia studio in Atlanta, Georgia, where he established and developed the studio’s hair and makeup departments across multiple productions.

Today, Dontay continues to work in television while running his own hair studio and managing multiple business ventures. His journey—from Compton to Hollywood to Atlanta—reflects resilience, reinvention, and an unwavering passion for his craft.
